It feels like whenever a new EV is revealed these days, it’s yet another SUV to write about that’s had some extravagant showcase. Refreshingly, then, the Polestar 5 has had the camo quietly peeled back to reveal a new saloon coming.

Set to rival the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S, the 5 has been heavily based on the Precept concept showcased in 2020. Unsurprisingly due to the need to meet regulations and mass production capabilities, it’s not quite as soft-edged and futuristic looking, but does at least drop the eyesore roof-mounted sensor pod.

Technical details are still a little scarce on the car, with the reveal buried among other Polestar business dealings focusing on its design, but two electric motors combining to produce 874bhp and 663lb ft of torque - 604bhp of which comes from the rear motor alone.

It uses 800v charging architecture and could be the first Polestar to get new battery tech the company has developed with StoreDot, said to allow for 100 miles of range to be added in five minutes without putting any additional degradation.

Polestar will test a prototype of 5 with the tech ahead of its launch, but it’s unlikely to be offered when the saloon immediately goes to market in 2025.

No weight figure is yet available, but the 5 could end up relatively light for a big electric car, with the body constructed largely from aluminium. That’ll help with its efficiency, which has yet to be published though reported to be targeted at 300 miles initially. It could also get fully autonomous driving, which is currently being worked on for the smaller 4 saloon.

There’s no reveal yet of the interior, or full specs for the Polestar 5, but we’ll keep you posted when more details are confirmed.
